Dean School of Agriculture, Food Security & Environmental Sciences
Overview of the School
The School of Agriculture, Food Security and Environmental Science (SAFSES) was formed in 2021 out of merger of the School of Agriculture and Food Security (SAFS), and School of Environment and Earth Science (SEES) cognizant of the close interaction between agricultural production and environment. The school is strategically positioned to respond to the national and regional food security needs through teaching, research and community engagement. We run dynamic academic programs that respond to national, regional and international training needs. The academic programs are offered in four Departments namely Department of Crop and Soil Sciences (which is also the oldest department in the school), Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development, Department of Animal and Fisheries Sciences, and the Department of Environmental Science. In collaboration with national and international research institutions and universities, the school consistently pursues research towards increasing farm efficiency as it continues to expand frontiers of agricultural and life sciences thus creating new knowledge. The teaching and research agenda of the school is executed by a good mix of young and experienced multi-disciplinary faculty. The school is set to emerge as a centre of excellence in Agricultural, aquaculture and Environmental training and research in the great Lakes region. We have taken particularly interest in practical and experiential training targeting the labor market competencies for employability as well as innovations and enterprising leveraging on our strategic agro-ecological location (Upper Midlands (UM) to Lower Midlands (LM 5)) and close proximity to the Lake Victoria, Uganda and Tanzania borders.
